Nesting Boxes

Indian Ringneck Parrot

First season I used a square box and my female crushed her chicks, I put this down to the fact that she was young and inexperienced. Since then I have used a taller "Ringneck" box that I purchased from the Nowra bird sale which includes a climbing structure that I've had two successful clutches from.

Green Cheeked Conure

I provided a large square box year round as they sleep in it. It took me a couple of years but eventually they breed in the box (four chicks on the first season) and my female is now sitting on her second clutch. So even though it took some time I have had success from the box.

Scarlet Chested / Bourke Parrots / Red Rumps

I started using Budgie nesting boxes (15cm Height, 15cm Width, 23cm Depth) with these breeds but I found when offered a choice they will choose a larger nesting box. In some cases nesting two hens to a box.

Gouldian Finch

As this is my first season I have had no real success but I'm using a standard sized finch box with dried grass made into a hollow ball inside as nesting material. They have nested in the box and produced and clutch of four nearly too fledgling but I somehow lost the lot.

Princess Parrot

Unfortunately I had my female Princess parrot die so I can provide no real insight here. Last season was unsuccessful when I provided an L shaped nest box and one that I converted out of a hollow log.

I have a new female that I purchased from a breeder which used a Z type breeding box. I will be purchasing one for next season. I have also been had some feed back that a standard square box at a appropriate size will work.

I eventually had success when I least expected it. I assumed my female was too immature a just provided a square type box (30cm Height, 25cm Width, 27cm Depth) because it was all I had available and had success. I wont be messing with a proven method next breeding season.

  1. L shape is very good for birds to breed, should be in good size.
